Hungary

In Hungary, FIP Coupons and FIP 50 Tickets are recognized primarily by MÁV as well as on the Hungarian routes of GySEV. With MÁV, depending on the train category, surcharges and/or reservations are required, particularly in long-distance traffic.

In addition to MÁV and GySEV, private operators such as RegioJet operate in Hungary, but they do not recognize FIP.

On the vagonWeb website, you can search for individual train numbers. However, it is not possible to search for connections. If several trains with the same train number exist, you must select the correct route of the train. Afterwards, the Carrier is displayed. For cross-border connections, multiple operators are shown.

Hungary has a dense rail network with a clear hub in Budapest. Important international corridors exist towards Vienna, Bratislava, Košice, Bucharest and Belgrade. Long-distance traffic is dominated by InterCity, EuroCity and Railjet connections; regional service varies depending on the region.

The infrastructure is being partially modernized, while there are still routes with older rolling stock and longer travel times. For scenic train journeys, the region around Lake Balaton is of particular interest, where both long-distance and regional trains operate. In addition to Budapest, other beautiful cities such as Győr or Eger are easily accessible by train.

Slovakia

Long-distance trains of MÁV operate between Bratislava and Budapest via Szob. Additionally, there are cross-border regional train connections between Košice and Budapest-Keleti across the border at Čaňa (currently in substitute rail service). In each case, a continuous FIP 50 ticket or FIP Coupons from ŽSR / ZSSK and MÁV are required.

On the route Hegyeshalom - Bratislava, regional trains of ŽSR / ZSSK operate across the Rajka border crossing, which are operated by MÁV in the Hungarian section. Here, FIP tickets from MÁV and ŽSR / ZSSK are required.

Romania

Most international connections from Romania to Hungary operate. These include both daytime trains as well as night train connections such as the famous Dacia, which runs between Bucharest in Romania via Budapest to Vienna in Austria. The connections can be used with FIP for the entire route. To do this, either a continuous FIP 50 ticket or FIP Coupons from CFR and MÁV (if continuing to Austria, additionally a coupon from ÖBB) must be available.

Serbia

Budapest can be reached from Belgrade with two changes (Subotica and Szeged). The cross-border section from Subotica in Serbia to Szeged in Hungary takes place in regional traffic. The connections are operated by the Hungarian railway MÁV and in Serbia by SV. For cross-border journeys, a continuous FIP discount ticket or FIP Coupons from both railway companies are required. On the high-speed route between Belgrade and Budapest, continuous trains are planned for the future, some even extending to Vienna.

Croatia

Hungary is accessible by train from Croatia via the Gyékényes and Letenye border crossings. These trains connect in particular Zagreb with Budapest and represent an important connection between the two countries.

For use with FIP on these routes, either a FIP discount ticket or FIP Coupons from MÁV and HŽ are required. For international trains, in particular InterCity and EuroCity connections, a reservation is usually required.

Slovenia

Hungary and Slovenia are directly connected in rail transport only via the Hodoš border crossing. Via the border crossing, one to two long-distance trains run daily from Ljubljana to Budapest, some starting at the Adriatic coast in Koper. They are operated by SŽ on the Slovenian section and by MÁV on the Hungarian side.

For a continuous journey, either a FIP discount ticket or FIP Coupons from both companies is required. It is important to check in advance whether the trains actually run via Hodoš, as there are also direct connections from Slovenia via Austria to Hungary. In this case, an ÖBB coupon would be required in addition to using coupons. Furthermore, there are still regional trains from Slovenian Hodoš to Hungarian Zalaegerszeg, operated by GySEV and SŽ. Therefore, unlike the long-distance trains described, an FIP coupon from GySEV is required for the Hungarian section.

Austria

From Austria, both cross-border regional trains and EuroCity trains / Railjets can be used. On the long-distance connection from Vienna to Budapest via the Hegyeshalom border crossing, FIP tickets from ÖBB and MÁV are required. On all cross-border regional connections, the operator is GySEV, which means FIP tickets from ÖBB and GySEV are required. There is also the option to use the night train connection Dacia from Vienna. For this, a continuous FIP 50 ticket or FIP Coupons from ÖBB and MÁV plus a reservation must be available.
